Fall Home Prep Checklist
As fall arrives in Northern Colorado, the changing season is a great time to reset, declutter, and get your home ready for the colder months ahead. It is time to start preparing your home for winter, and Gone For Good has assembled a checklist to help you clear the clutter and stay organized.
1. Tackle the Entryway
- Swap out summer gear: Put away sandals, sun hats, and beach bags. Bring out boots, scarves, gloves, and jackets.
- Create a family station: Set up a designated space for backpacks, jackets, and shoes. A clean entryway reduces morning chaos.
- Start a donation pile: Before stowing away summer, separate items you no longer use and start your donation pile.
2. Organize Closets
- Seasonal wardrobe switch: Pack away summer clothes and bring out the fall layers. Take this time to donate or sell anything that no longer fits or you didn’t wear all summer. Have everyone in your family participate in closet clean-outs.
- Winter gear check: Ensure you have all the winter essentials like gloves, hats, and heavy coats, and that everything still fits and is in decent condition. Coats and other winter gear that is no longer used or has been outgrown should go to the donate-pile.
3. Declutter the Kitchen
- Pantry purge: Organize your pantry by going through its contents and clearing out expired and unused pantry items. This makes space for hearty fall and winter ingredients. Unwanted non-perishable food items can be donated to food banks or local church organizations.
- Prep for holiday meals: As the holidays approach, a decluttered kitchen will make meal prep easier. Go through cabinets and drawers and get rid of any appliances, containers, dishes, other kitchen items you no longer use for your donation pile.
- Wipe down shelves and cabinets as you organize them.
4. Garage & Storage Clean-Up
- Swap seasonal items: Store summer sports gear and gardening tools. Make room for fall and winter essentials like leaf rakes and snow shovels. Separate items you no longer need or use.
- Winterize outdoor furniture: Clean and cover outdoor furniture or store it away until spring. If you’re planning to replace outdoor furniture in the spring, don’t take the old set to the dump! Gone For Good can haul it away for you.
5. Prep Living Spaces for Cozy Weather
- Declutter blankets and throws: Wash and organize blankets and pillows to create a cozy, clutter-free living room for fall movie nights.
- Fireplace check: Ensure the area around your fireplace is clutter-free and ready for colder weather. It is a good idea to have your fireplace and chimney cleaned and inspected by a professional yearly.
6. Children’s Rooms & Homework Stations
- Clear out old toys, school and art supplies: Your children have likely outgrown many of their toys. Set aside gently used items for your donation pile and discard anything broken or no longer needed.
- Create an organized study area: Set up a clutter-free space with a power station for tablets and laptops where kids can focus on homework
7. Get Ready for Winter Weather
- Winterize your home: Check for drafty windows and doors, and ensure you have winter essentials like salt and shovels handy.
- HVAC Inspection: Experts recommend having your furnace inspected and serviced at least every 2 years to keep in running efficiently, which will help with lower heating bills. At minimum, replace your furnace’s filter every 90 days.
8. Use Green Junk Removal Services
